What is a Novena?
The word novena signifies “nine” and refers to a public or private devotion that extends for nine consecutive days. The Church approves of such devotional practices, provided that there is no superstition connected with the number nine and that such devotions are used as a help to prayer. The New Catholic Encyclopedia goes on to say that the kind of devotional novenas we know—did not appear until the Middle Ages. They began in France and Spain as days of preparation for Christmas. Nine days of prayer were observed in honor of the nine months Jesus spent in the womb of Mary. The Novena being offered at St. Mary Magdalen, is a way of honoring fathers. It will be observed at the 8AM Masses on the two Sundays, June 19 and June 26, and the early-morning weekday Masses June 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25 and 27. The intentions for the Novena Masses will be for all those whose names appear on the offering envelopes returned.
